BEHIND THE MIC: Episode 3 - Monkeys, Cows, Rabies and a Very Long Plastic Sleeve

BEHIND THE MIC: Episode 3 - Monkeys, Cows, Rabies and a Very Long Plastic Sleeve

Episode 3 of Dad and the Vet Tech was one of those “how did we get here?” conversations which somehow started with a reminder at dinner and ended with monkeys. A casual reminder from the Vet Tech's Mom sent us back to the time Xena lost all her toenails. Every one of those yes, which was unique enough that the vet called in the entire staff like it was a medical field trip. That tied right back to Episode 1 and our German Shepherds, Czar and Xena, autoimmune issues, and the kind of lessons you never forget.

From there, we jumped into vet tech school memories, including rabies vaccines that are not cheap, not fun, yet required if you plan on working around animals that bite first and ask questions later. We also talked about one photo that needs no explanation in the large animal world... a very long plastic sleeve and a bovine pregnancy check. Add in hands on college training, a semester working with rhesus macaques monkeys who watch TV, peel oranges and had personalities more human than some people.

We wrapped things up with our two-and-two segment, because for every bad story there has to be a good one. A tiny kitten rescued by troopers and thriving despite losing a leg. A firefighter walking into floodwaters to save a stranded dog and on the tougher side, reminders of why animal welfare matters and why this work can be difficult.

Episode 3 had laughs, a few “wait, what?” moment and the kind of stories that live on after the mic is off.

Thanks for listening and we'll see you all next Sunday !
