Behind the Mic: Episode 1
Episode 1 - Our first full show is published and we had a lot of fun doing it. It's funny, we wrote out a general outline to follow and right out of the gate, it took a turn. As you heard, we walked right down the path about losing a pet. We felt like it was better to chase the topic down and tackle it rather than setting it up on the back burner to come back to in a future episode.
We learned that this "podcasting" is a bit harder than it seems. When anyone first thinks of starting a podcast, it seems so simple. Pick a topic, talk about it while recording and carry on. We're here to tell you, it is not that easy and at times a topic leads you into an area you never expected to discuss.
Our first example of this was talking about our German Shepherd named Czar. In the episode, we talk about how we got Czar and the fact that he was originally purchased by the Rhode Island State Police. He got some police training and was then returned for what they considered a "physical defect". Their loss was our gain because as you heard us say, he was an amazing dog for our family.
Now, when we talk about finding out that Czar had Lupus, it wasn't until he was much older. I'm not sure how common this is in dogs but as soon as he was properly diagnosed, his quality of life greatly improved. We also talk about getting the pick of the next litter from our breeder because of the "defect" Czar had and we ended up with a second German Shepherd puppy that we named Xena. Together they were inseparable.
This topic led us into the experience of having to make the impossible decision of putting a pet down. This was not how we planned to start off our very first episode but there we were and the fact that it has a big influence on why The Vet Tech chose her career path. After that, she was full throttle pursing her dream. It wasn't easy for her either, being away from home, studying very complex topics while trying to maintain good grades was a challenge.
Early on we chose not to name the college the Vet Tech went to for a few reasons. First and foremost, it was a good school and she learned so much by going there. We've joked about some things that happened there and just wouldn't want anything to be taken out of context.
The "Cram Shack" is a real thing we used to do to help with studying though I remember us doing more like flash cards, quick hitters that she had to memorize. Let us know if you like it as part of the show. On the front part of this website, you can leave us a voicemail or use the contact page. We are still creating our social media accounts at this point.
Anyway, we look forward to your feedback and will see you all in Episode 2 !
